Bilateral Relations

General

  • Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Lebanon was established in 1990. Sri Lanka's first Ambassador to Lebanon was appointed in 1997 and opened a Sri Lankan Mission in Beirut in 1998.
  • Before the opening of the Sri Lanka Mission in Beirut the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia and Egypt had been accredited to Lebanon.
  • Lebanon maintains concurrent accreditation from New Delhi.

Parliamentary Friendship Group

During the meeting with Hon. Speaker, Nabin Berry on 24/05/2017, Sri Lanka Ambassador has proposed to establish Parliament Friendship Group with Sri Lanka to exchange parliamentary experts between the two countries, focusing to address the issues that are faced by the Sri Lankan migrant workers in Lebanon.

Accordingly, the Lebanese National assembly has already established their group. The Foreign Ministry has conveyed the same to the Secretary General/ Sri Lanka Parliament and awaits response on the list of parliamentarians from the Sri Lanka side.

 

Cooperation in Multilateral Fora

Candidatures

Lebanon’s candidatures for 2017 and beyond:

  • Lebanon has sought support from Sri Lanka for the candidature of Mrs. Vѐra El Khoury Lacoeuilhe for the post of Director General of UNESCO for the term 2017-2021, at the elections to be held during the 39th General Conference of UNESCO in November 2017 in Paris.
    Sri Lanka has not decided its voting position yet.
  • Lebanon has sought support from Sri Lanka for the candidature for the post of Vice-President of the Regional Commission for the Middle-East of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the term 2017-2019, at the elections to be held during the 22nd General Assembly of the UNWTO on 4th September 2017 in Beijing, China.
    Sri Lanka has not decided its voting position yet.
  • Lebanon has sought support from Sri Lanka for their candidature to the Executive Council of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the term 2018-2021, at the elections to be held during the 22nd General Assembly of the UNWTO on 4th September 2017 in Beijing, China. 


Support extended by Lebanon for candidatures from Sri Lanka :

  • Sri Lanka’s candidature to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the term 2015-2019 in Group IV, at the election held on 11th November 2015 in Paris.
  • Sri Lanka’s candidature to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the term 2015-2018, at the elections held in November 2014 in Busan, Republic of Korea.

Support extended by Sri Lanka for the candidatures of Lebanon in 2014-2017:

  • Candidature of Ms. Mariam Eid, for the post of Vice-Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), during the 40th Session of the CAC from 17-22 July 2017 in Geneva.
  • Candidacy to the Council of Administrators (CA) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for the term 2017-2020, during the 26th Congress of the UPU from 05-06 October 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Candidacy to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the term 2015-2019 in Group IV, during the 38th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in November 2015, in Paris.
  • Candidacy to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2016-2018, during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in 2015 in New York.
  • Candidacy to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the term 2015-2018, during the Plenipotentiary Conference of ITU from 20th October to 07th November 2014, in Busan, Korea.
