Sri Lanka’s participation in United Interim Force, Lebanon

The first Force protection Company consisted of 150 personal was deployed at the United Nations Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on 16.12.2010. So far, to date ten force protection companies participated for the force protection duties on rotational basis. Total troops contribution to date is 1500. (As at 29.01.2017)

UNIFIL is carrying out all the protective and tactical security measures necessary to prevent of mitigate the effect of threats. The main tasks of the Sri Lanka Force Protection unit is to ensure security of Force Headquarters compound where all command elements, branches and all key personnel including the Force Commander/Head of the Mission are accompanied. This includes the improvement of infrastructure and additional measures for physical security of UNIFIL personnel against attacks of conventional weapons, fire protection, prevention of health hazards and active security measures.

Assigned tasks are as follows:

  • To apply all FB measures in accordance with the alert status established by UNIFIL Force Commander.
  • To provide updated information and assess the FP situation in their respective areas as requested by the Force Protection Working Group. (FPWG)
  • To execute training activities on alert status and FP measures.

Having triumphantly concluded six years of impeccable tour of duty at Lebanon, the Sri Lanka Army Force of duty at Lebanon, the Sri Lanka Army Force Protection Company has proved itself as a dedicated embodiment of the UNIFIL. Adding more value to the team credit, a sound rapport has been maintained with the civilian folks of Lebanon in view of achieving the greater heights of peacekeeping throughout its period of development.

Exchange of visits

Sri Lanka Ambassador proposes following for the cooperation in the Defense sector: (clearance from the Ministry of Defense/Sri Lanka has to be obtained.)

  1. Exchange of senior military officials/experts -Govt. of Sri Lanka could initiate exchange visits of Senior Military officials on annual basis.
  2. Granting Scholarships and training.

In order to share experience and knowledge and also to lay foundation for future Defense Corporation, Sri Lankan Government could offer some places at Kotalawala Defense Academy.
